A man who was to depart to Saudi Arabia was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Monday, at the security hold area (SHA) near the check in counters at Terminal 3, after a country-made pistol was found in his bag.

The accused Anis Ahmed was taken into custody and interrogated by Delhi police’s Special Cell and officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He was booked under the Arms Act.

“After his luggage passed through the scanner, a pistol was found in his bag. Ahmed claimed that he did not know how the pistol landed in his baggage. CISF reported the matter to Delhi Police and the Special Cell and IB were called. The man was arrested and taken out of the terminal,” said a senior police official to the Times of India (TOI).

Police said that Ahmed intended to leave to Saudi Arabia for employment-related purposes. He is a resident of the Sambhal district and claims to have travelled to the airport by bus.

“The accused is under police custody and we are trying to trace the source of the weapon. His links are being identified. CCTV footages of the terminal and the area outside the airport are also being checked to see if someone else dropped the weapon in his luggage,” said Dinesh Kumar Gupta, DCP IGI, to TOI.
