Look who’s come out in support of net neutrality in India! None other than the man fresh from his much-discussed mystery sabbatical – Rahul Gandhi.

In Parliament, the Gandhi scion spoke in favour of net neutrality in India and accused the Centre of trying to give away internet space to corporates.

He said, “Over 1 million people are fighting for net neutrality and the government is trying to carve out the net and hand it over to the corporates.”

“Every youth should have the right to use the net,” added the Congress vice-president.

Earlier, the raging debate around net neutrality forced Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to break his silence on the issue. In a post on his profile page, Zuckerberg said net neutrality can coexist with zero-rating programmes like Internet.org.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) decided to end net neutrality in India by April 24, 2015. But netizens raised widespread objections to this move. Net neutrality means allowing users to access all websites freely. If this were ended, users would have to pay a substantial amount for internet services and still have limited access, since service providers would get to decide which sites could be accessed free.
