Jyothika fans are super excited. For the actress, who gave up a rocking acting career after she married Suriya in 2006, returns to the big screen this weekend after a gap of six years. It’s one of the most talked-about comebacks in recent times. We turn the spotlight on the actress and the film:

Jo is back!

Suriya said: ‘Whenever I met my fans they would relentlessly keep asking me why I’m keeping Jyothika away from films. We were actually waiting for the right opportunity and I’m happy that it has happened now.’

Suriya, a latecomer, joined Twitter on Women’s Day. He announced Jyothika’s comeback film with one of his first tweets and also unveiled one of the first looks of the movie.

A big thank you to hubby Suriya

Jyotika said: ‘36 Vayathinile happens to be one of the best films in my career. I am so much blessed to have Suriya as my husband. He has been a great support in letting me proceed with my dreams and passion.’

36 Vayathinile, a woman’s story

36 Vayathinile is a remake of the Malayalam film How Old Are You? It’s made by Rosshan Andrews, who also directed the original and stars Rahman opposite Jyothika. The film revolves around the everyday situations, insecurities and anxieties a woman in her mid-30s experiences as the dreaded 40s draw near.

Positive reviews

The early reviews of 36 Vayathinile have been positive and are underlined also by good wishes for Jyothika.

Jo, the hit actress

The last of Jyothika’s major films was the 2007 film Mozhi, in which she played a deaf-mute girl. The charming romance was a runaway hit. For her sensitive portrayal Jyothika won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress.

In a career that lasted less than ten years and fewer than 50 films, Jyothika starred in a remarkable number of hits and was the leading actress of her time. Some of our favourite Jyothika films are the beautifully made Rhythm, Thenali and Vettaiyadu Vilayadu in which she starred opposite Kamal Haasan and the full-on masala entertainer Dhool. Another of her superhits is Chandramukhi, in which she played the demanding title role. She won a Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Actress for this performance as well.

Jyothika at 36

After a break of some six years – she was last seen in the 2009 Malayalam film Seetha Kalyanam – Jyothika makes it to the big screen this weekend. As it happens, the actress is 36 now and fans can’t wait to see her back in action.
